BNP spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged Friday that government was trying to hang onto power by controlling the media, report agencies.
"The government wants to cling to power by re-establishing one-party rule after snatching people's basic rights by controlling the media," Mirza Fakhrul, also the BNP acting secretary general, said this while addressing a post-Eid reunion organised by Sonargaon Upazila unit of BNP at Meghna Ghat Balurmat in Narayanganj Friday.
Criticising the government for what he said formulating the National Broadcasting Policy, 2014 with a motive to gag the media, the BNP leader said the current regime is making black laws one after another to hush up its misdeeds and corruption.
"Awami League (AL) had shut down all the newspapers except four after establishing one-party Baksal rule in 1975. This time they're also going ahead with the same policy."
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the government would be compelled to arrange fresh national polls soon in the face of movement.
He reiterated the demand for holding the election under a non-party and neutral government.
Mirza Fakhrul called upon the party leaders and activists to join the movement responding to the call of party chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Khaleda Zia called for the movement not to come to the power rather the movement aims to bring back the democratic rights of the people, he said.
Referring to the seven-murder in the district, he said Narayangaj district has now fallen prey to terrorism.
The situation in the district would not be improved unless the BNP comes to power, said Fakhrul.
Sonargaon thana BNP president Khandaker Abu Jafar presided over the function while central BNP leaders Barkatullah Bulu, education affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Kokhon, district BNP president Advocate Toimur Alam Khandaker, general secretary Kazi Moniruzzaman, Narayangani city BNP general secretary ATM Kamal, Sonargaon upazila parishad chairman and thana BNP general secretary Azharul Islam Mannan spoke on the occasion.
Meanwhile, BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said Friday the AL government has become the role model of annihilating life in the present world by resorting to enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
"This government could not give people anything except dead bodies.  It's also become a role model of taking life in the current world by carrying out extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances through its different forces and Jubo League and Chhatra League cadres," he said.
Rizvi came up with the allegation at a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office.
