Govt urged to approve anti-corruption law

The Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) will observe 'Corruption Resistance Week' from March 26 to April 1 for the third time to involve all with the movement against corruption.
"We fought for our freedom since March 26, 1971 and got independence from the Pakistani oppression after a long battle. Now, we will fight against corruption by recalling and following the sprit of independence war," ACC Chairman Golam Rahman said while addressing a press conference at the ACC conference room Sunday.
The ACC Chairman also urged the government to approve the anti-corruption law in the coming Parliament session to help speed up the anti-graft movement.
"The present ACC law is good but it has some limitations. In order to accelerate the anti-graft activities, the government has taken an initiative to amend the law and it is now awaiting the final approval from Parliament," the ACC boss mentioned.
The week-long campaign has been designed with various programmes to create awareness among the people especially the young generation to curb corruption for overall development of the country, he added.
The ACC Chairman said the commission has already taken different measures to give the anti-corruption movement an institutional shape.
"We have formed 492 corruption resistance committees at different districts and upazila levels and have formed 18,656 Satata Sangha at different educational institutions across the country to strengthen the movement," he noted.
Golam Rahman said they also formed an anti-corruption slogan or oath in verses containing anti-corruption sayings for the students of different educational institutions to read it out during assembly everyday.
The countrywide programme includes procession, forming human chain, displaying posters, holding seminar, symposium, cultural event, anti-corruption programmes in the mass media and sending SMS through mobile phone.
The ACC has sent letters to the Members of Parliament (MPs), editors of different print and electronic media to make separate programmes as part of the observance of corruption resistance week.
"We urged the MPs to play role against corruption by taking part in programmes to create awareness among mass people," ACC boss added.
As part of the anti-corruption campaign, the ACC is giving awards to the journalists for best report on corruption, Golam Rahman said.
Director General of ACC Dr Md Shamsul Arefin announced the week-long programmes adding that the city corporation, Zilla, Upazila administration will observe the week with various events.
ACC commissioners Md Sahabuddin and Md Badiuzzaman were present at the press conference.
