Law and Information Adviser Mainul Hosein Monday said the present caretaker government (CG) wants to hold a meaningful election so that an honest, capable and responsible government can come to power, reports UNB.
"The Election Commission (EC) has been reconstituted. Initiative has been taken to make the EC independent from Prime Minister's office. The EC is preparing voter list with photo and the election will be held by the end of 2008 if this work is completed," he apprised a Chinese delegation.
The Information Adviser was talking to the delegation from China Institute of Contemporary International Relations when the team called on him at his Information Ministry office.
They discussed various affairs, including the present political situation of the country, the ongoing reform activities, elections and the investment situation.
The delegation members observed that the caretaker government of Bangladesh was doing a very hard job. They appreciated the efforts of the government in the ongoing reform drive.
Mentioning the reform activities, the Advisor said an independent Anti-corruption Commission had been formed to bring the corrupt to justice.
"The trial of the corrupt is being held under the common law of the land, and the process is continuing to separate the judiciary from the executive," he told the Chinese team of international policy experts.
Mainul said there was a favourable environment of investment prevailing in Bangladesh: the rules of investment were very easy, labour was cheap and EPZ facility was available.
The Adviser said," China is our important friend. We need China's support and friendship. Bangladesh believes in policy of peaceful coexistence with neighbouring nations."
