Govt works towards polls: French envoy

Outgoing French Ambassador in Bangladesh Jacques Andre Costilhes has said they truly believe the caretaker government (CG) was committed to election following the roadmap.
The government has started the technical work for holding the election, the French envoy said when he paid a farewell call on Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed in the city Thursday, reports UNB.
Costilhes, who discharged his duties in Bangladesh for the last three years, lauded the present CG's performance under the leadership of Fakhruddin Ahmed.
Briefing the French envoy about reform measures and project on preparation of voters' list with photographs of about 90 million people, the CA said his government was on the track.
He told the envoy about the support given by the French government to the CG as well as the European Union's support to the Election Commission (EC).
On trade relations, Fakhruddin Ahmed said France was the fourth largest export destination of Bangladesh products and there was scope for further expanding the trade and commerce, according to the CA's Press Secretary Syed Fahim Munaim.
Ambassador Costilhes mentioned about the French investment and projects in Bangladesh, including La Farge cement factory, Total Oil's gas exploration project in the Bay of Bengal and Danone's joint venture yogurt project with Grameen in Bogra.
The CA thanked the ambassador for his contribution towards deepening the existing good bilateral relations between the two countries during his tenure here.
He also thanked him for the French assistance in economic development of Bangladesh.
