Hartal observed peacefully in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Nov 05: The daylong hartal enforced by BNP was observed peacefully in the port city of Chattogram on Sunday.

There occurred no unwanted incidents in the city and rural areas of Chattogram during the hartal.

Chattogram city, north and south district units of BNP enforced the hartal in Chattogram to protest the arrest of BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Vehicular movement in the port city remained normal during the hartal : but the long-distance buses remained off the roads.

The city streets were unusually quiet, with presence of fewer people.

However, private cars, auto-rickshaws, ambulances, pickups, and buses were seen playing.

Loading and unloading activities in Chittagong Port, the prime sea port of the country, continued normally during the hartal; but delivery of cargoes remained suspended.

Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) sources said loading and unloading works continued in all ships at the jetties of Chittagong Port.

As trucks could not run on the roads, delivery was suspended during the hartal.

Omar Faruk, secretary of CPA, said, "Loading and unloading of cargoes and containers remained normal. But delivery was disrupted during the hartal hour."

There was not presence of noticeable number of picketers on the streets due to the strict security measures taken by the law enforcing agencies.

Chattogram Metropoli-tan Police (CMP) and district police said picketers tried to bring out processions in different areas. But the overall law and order situation was under control of the police.
