Salahuddin Ahmed's wife Hasina Ahmed said Friday she is waiting for the prime minister's intervention to trace her husband, report agencies.

She told journalists at her Gulshan residence, "I have urged the prime minister and am now waiting for her orders."

Ten days have passed by since BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed was picked up reportedly by a group of plainclothes men from an Uttara house in the capital, but he could not be traced as of Friday evening.

Acting on a rumor, Gaibandha police launched a drive in a remote char area of the northern district Thursday night but failed to find any clue to the missing BNP leader.

Deputy Commissioner of Gaibandha Ehsan Elahi said police conducted a drive at Char Khatiamari of the Brahmaputra River in Fulchhari at noon on information that Salahuddin Ahmed was there but they could not trace him.

A number of BNP leaders including Standing Committee Member Mahbubur Rahman went to the Gulshan residence on Friday morning.

Talking to reporters Mahbub said it is matter of danger that a leader has remained missing for 10 days. "The disappearance of a leader like

Salahuddin Ahmd has manifested a serious slide in the country's law-and-order situation."

Mentioning that it the responsibility of the government to trace out Salahuddin, he urged the government to return him to his family unharmed, no matter who picked him up.

Replying to a question, Mahubub said the government should seek help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), a US governmental agency, to rescue Salahuddin if the local law enforcers fail to do that. "It can't be acceptable that people will go missing and no one will be able to rescue or trace them out."

The former MP Hasina Ahmed went to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) Thursday and submitted a note, appealing that the prime minister order the law enforcers to produce Salahuddin in public.

Salahuddin's family claims he was picked up by plainclothesmen on Mar 10 from a house in Uttara.
