Bangladesh Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Monday asked the leaders and workers of Awami Swechchhasebak League (ASL) and other associated bodies of Bangladesh Awami League to uphold the people's confidence on the government through their utmost honesty as well as sincere and dedicated service to the nation, reports BSS.
"Money matters nothing, but honesty and dedication matter to win the hearts of all," the Prime Minister said this when leaders and workers of ASL called on her at her official residence Jamuna on the occasion of the 16th founding anniversary of the organisation.
ASL President Krishibid Bahauddin Nasim and General Secretary Pankaj Devnath also spoke on the occasion.
Refuting allegations, the Prime Minister categorically said that democracy is being truly practised at all spheres of Bangladesh Awami League and its associate bodies up to the grassroots level. "Bangladesh Awami League and its associate bodies are disciplined political parties, in which democracy is being exercised with total sincerity," she said.
Sheikh Hasina said leaders of Awami League were elected at ward, union, upazila, district and city levels through election after the last council of the party held in 2002. "Exercise of democracy inside the party has started from the grassroots level," she added.
The Prime Minister said Awami League selected party candidates in contesting the last general election through a democratic process. "As a result, we have got the desired mandate," she also said.
Referring to the party's council held on Friday, the Awami League Chief said the councillors unanimously elected their leaders through election and also vested power upon the party president and general secretary to elect other office bearers. "The total process was completed through a pure democratic norm," she said.
The Prime Minister thanked the leaders and workers of Swechchhasebak League for playing an important role in all democratic movements of the country and expressed her firm hope that this party would contribute its best in implementing Awami League's pledge for change.
Expressing her gratitude to the leaders and workers of Awami League and its associated bodies for successfully holding the party council within the shortest possible time, she said this was possible only for the relentless efforts of all leaders and workers of AL and other associate organisations.
Sheikh Hasina said the government would be able to build the Digital Bangladesh as per its commitment made in the election manifesto if such a disciplined organisation like Awami League remains with the government.
