Hasina, Koirala discuss peace in the region

Nay Pyi Taw (Myanmar), Mar 4 (UNB): The Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and Nepal Tuesday underlined maintaining peace and stability in the region.

They also agreed that peace and stability are the preconditions for development.

Two leaders expressed their views that the socioeconomic development could be ensured by the continuation of democracy.

Bangladesh Prime Minister and her Nepalese counterpart Sushil Koirala expressed this view when they held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the third Bimstec Summit in Myanmar.

PM's Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil briefed reporters after the meeting.

Both leaders agreed that Bangladesh and Nepal could work together in hydropower, tourism and agro-processing industries.

The Prime Minister said Nepal is the 'daughter of Himalayas' while Bangladesh has the longest unbroken sea beach in the world.

"The two nations could attract huge number of tourists and the sector would witness huge development, if the two nations work together," she said.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction over the existing bilateral ties between the two countries.

Rajapaksa

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh will work together with other nations of the Bay of Bengal region for its prosperity. She called poverty and terrorism as common enemy of the sub-region.

She made the remarks during a meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the sidelines of the third Bimstec Summit in Myanmar, PM's Special Assistant Mahbubul Hoque Shakil told reporters.

Shakil said the two leaders discussed bilateral issues focusing on boosting trade and investment and cooperation in the health and tourism sectors.

Hasina suggested Dhaka and Colombo work together in pharmaceutical, jute, ceramics and agro-processing industries.

She also requested the Sri Lankan President to make opportunities for Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to investment in the island nation.

She sought Sri Lanka's support for the development of the nursing education as she noted Sri Lanka is reputed for having an efficient nursing sector.

The Sri Lankan President congratulated Sheikh Hasina on her victory in the January general elections and becoming prime minister for the third time.
