November 25, 2009 00:00:00

The High Court (HC) Tuesday directed the government to allow BNP stalwart Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, MP to go abroad and return home within two months, reports UNB.
The court order came following a writ petition filed by Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury challenging the legality of the immigration authorities' action of preventing him from flying to Singapore for medical check up Monday.
Passing the order, a division bench comprising Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Mamnoon Rahman issued a rule asking the government to explain why its action of preventing the petitioner from going abroad should not be declared to be without lawful authority.
Mr Chowdhury, now on bail, faces a number of cases, including graft, extortion and treason. On September 5, last year he was released from jail after 19 months of his arrest by the joint forces during the military-backed caretaker government.
Adv Shah Manjurul Huq appeared for SQ Chowdhury, also parliamentary affairs adviser to the BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the government.
