HC bins writ on Bar Council poll results

The High Court (HC) rejected on Monday the writ petition seeking vote recounting in the Bar Council election as per the rules of the Bangladesh Bar Council Order-1972, reports UNB.

An HC bench of Justice Mainul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Ashraful Kamal turned down the writ petition as 'being not pressed'.

It means the bench passed the rejection order considering that the petition was not placed before the bench for hearing.

Deputy attorney general Motahar Hossain Saju represented the state while Eunus Ali Akand stood for the petitioner.

Earlier on Sunday, Supreme Court (SC) lawyer Eunus Ali Akand filed the writ petition with the HC seeking vote recounting in the Bar election as per the rules of the Bangladesh Bar Council Order 1972.

The election to the Bangladesh Bar Council was held across the country on August 26.

On September 3, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, chairman of the bar council, announced the official results of the election in which Awami League-backed candidates were unofficially declared winners.

In the petition, the SC lawyer said according to the Section 15 (2) of the Bangladesh Bar Council Order-1972, the Bar Council Chairman should count the votes receiving ballot papers from different polling centers.

But without counting the votes centrally, AG Mahbubey Alam announced the polls results in violation of the rules.
