HC formulas show credible polls not possible under AL: BNP

Though BNP thinks the two formulas for the election-time government recently given by the High Court (HC) are impractical, the party claimed on Sunday the apex court through it recognised that no fair election is possible under the current ruling party, reports UNB.
The party also claimed that the HC through giving two formulas has also affirmed that the country has been in a political crisis since the January-5 election was not fair and credible one.
"The recent HC verdict on the polls-time government has clearly demonstrated that the national election held in Bangladesh on January-5 was not the right one, and an inclusive election is not possible under such a ruling party," said BNP spokesman Asaduzzaman Ripon.
Addressing a press briefing at the party's Nayapaltan central office, he further said, "The verdict has also recognised people's view that no fair election is possible under a ruling party now in Bangladesh when there's no cohesion among the political parties."
The HC has recently come up with two formulas for the interim government to assist the Election Commission in holding the next two parliamentary elections.
An HC bench of Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar provided the formulas with some observations in its full judgment on uncontested election of 153 MPs in the 10th parliamentary election held on January 5 last year. The full verdict was released at the end of the last month.
In the first formula, the court suggested the formation of a cabinet for 90 days ahead of the election with 50 ministers from political parties based on percentage of votes they polled in the election. It also suggested that for the sake of an inclusive election, five technocrat ministers might be taken from the parties who boycotted the election to the present parliament.
In the second formula, the court suggested that the wining party would govern the country first for a period of four years and the main opposition party would run the country for the rest one year of the tenure.
About the first formula, Ripon said the HC through giving this formula has emphasised the necessity of an inclusive election in the country. "We also say the government must arrange a fair election with the participation of all parties. As the January-5 election was not inclusive one, the apex court has come up with such a formula. But this formula is not practical."
