HC hearing now on April 1

March 13, 2015 00:00:00

The hearing of a no-confidence plea by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, against the court trying her for two graft charges, has been deferred again, reports bdnews24.com.

Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque deferred the hearing on Thursday, as the other judge of the bench, Justice Md Khasruzzaman, was not available for the hearing, as he was on another bench.

The court scheduled the hearing after the vacation. The regular benches are scheduled to resume work from April 1.

The matter had featured in the bench's cause list a week earlier but the hearing was held up due to some doubt on whether it could be held at this bench.

There is a separate bench to hear Anti-Corruption Commission cases.

Khaleda's lawyers had on January 28 approached the bench led by Justice Syed AB Mahmudul Huq. But its jurisdiction was later changed.

The Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases are being tried by Dhaka's Third Special Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadar.

He issued an arrest warrant for the BNP chief on February 25 after she failed to turn up in several consecutive hearings.

Her lawyers appealed to the High Court for a stay on the warrants on March 3.

They also appealed to the trial court for withdrawal of the warrant, but the court, on March 4, did not oblige, keeping the warrant valid.

In 2008, ACC filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case against six including Khaleda and her son Tarique. It alleged that the defendants misappropriated Tk 21 million from funds meant for the trust, which reportedly came from a foreign bank.

In 2011, the anti-corruption watchdog prosecuted the BNP chief and three others for allegedly embezzling Tk 31.5 million from the Zia Charitable Trust.
