The High Court (HC) has fixed today (Tuesday) to pass order on a writ petition that sought change in the election schedule of the two city corporations of Dhaka as Saraswati Puja will be observed on January 30, the scheduled date for the election.

The HC bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam fixed the date on Monday after holding a hearing on the petition.

Ashoke Kumar Ghosh, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the petition on January 6, 2020, with the HC seeking its order to reschedule the election for the sake of smooth celebration of the second largest religion festival of the Hindu community.

Mr Ahoke himself took part in the hearing on behalf of the petitioner while Deputy Attorney General Noor-us Sadik stood for the state.

The chief election commissioner, home, law, Election Commission secretaries and deputy commissioner of Dhaka have been made respondents to the petition.

Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda on December 22, 2019, announced the schedule for the elections to Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to be held on January 30 this year.
