The High Court (HC) on Monday rejected the writ petition filed by BNP-backed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) polls Abdul Awal Mintoo, challenging cancellation of his nomination paper.
The HC bench, comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md. Ejarul Haque Akondo, passed the order.
With the HC order, the decision of DNCC returning officer that cancelled Mr Mintoo's nomination paper was upheld, lawyer concerned said.
Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud argued for Mr Mintoo, also former president of the apex trade body - FBCCI, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood up for the government in the court.
The DNCC returning officer on April 1 rejected the nomination paper on the ground that the person, who supported his candidature, was 'not a voter' of the respective city corporation.
Challenging the cancellation, Mr Mintoo filed an appeal with the Dhaka divisional commissioner on the following day, but the returning officer's decision was upheld by the commissioner on Saturday.
Then, he filed the writ petition with HC on Sunday.
