FE REPORT | December 21, 2023 00:00:00

The High Court on Wednesday rejected a writ petition filed seeking another schedule for the national elections under direct supervision of the Army after dissolving the incumbent parliament.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Iqbal Kabir and Justice Biswajit Debnath passed the order after hearing the writ petition filed by a political party, Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh.

Lawyer Saidur Rahman appeared in the court proceedings on behalf of the writ petitioner while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin and Deputy Attorney General Saiful Alam represented the state.

The HC rejected the petition as the petitioner directly filed the writ petition without sending any demand of justice, said the lawyers concerned.

Syed Imam Hayat, president of Insaniyat Biplob Bangladesh, filed the writ petition on December 10 this year seeking a new schedule for the parliament elections under direct supervision of the Army after dissolving the incumbent parliament.

The writ petition sought a directive from the HC to deploy the Army with magistracy powers to maintain law and order in the elections.

Law and Justice Division Secretary, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division Secretary, Cabinet Secretary, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and others were made respondents to the petition.
