HC stays Buet's decision to cancel hall seat of BCL leader Rabbi

FE REPORT | April 09, 2024 00:00:00

The High Court has stayed a decision of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) that cancelled the residency of its student and Chhatra League leader Imtiaz Hossen Rahim in a dormitory.

The HC bench of Justice Md Khasruzzaman and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Imtiaz, a second-year student of Civil Engineering Depart-ment, on Monday.

It also issued a rule asking the BUET authorities to explain as to why the notification that cancelled the residency of Imtiaz should not be declared illegal.

Now, there is no bar for the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader to stay in the dormitory following the HC order, according to his lawyer.

Senior lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque and barrister Muhammad Harunur Rashid appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the writ petitioner.

On 11 October 2019, the BUET administration issued a notification banning student politics on its campus following the killing of BUET student Abrar Fahad on October 06 at Sher-e-Bangla Hall by BCL activists.

On March 29 this year, BUET students again started boycott of classes and exams and demonstrated against a gathering of BCL activists on the campus on the midnight of March 27.

They demanded expulsion of several students, including Imtiaz, a central committee member of the pro-Awami League student body, for their open political activities on the campus.

The university on March 29 cancelled the residency of Imtiaz. BUET registrar Prof Dr Md Forkan Uddin issued a notification to this end.

It also formed a six-member committee to investigate the allegations and sought a report by April 08.

Imtiaz filed a petition challenging the legality of the notification and secured the HC order.

His lawyer, barrister Rashid, says the HC has stayed the effectiveness of the notification until the disposal of the rule issued in this regard.

As a result, there is no bar for Imtiaz to stay in his dormitory, according to him.

Earlier on April 01, following another writ petition by Imtiaz, the HC stayed a notification issued by the BUET authorities on 11 October 2019 banning student politics on the campus.
