HC to hear rule on Fakhrul's bail Jan 3

FE REPORT | December 18, 2023 00:00:00

The High Court on Sunday fixed January 3 in 2024 for holding hearing on its rule regarding granting bail to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in connection with a case filed over the attack on the residence of the Chief Justice on October 28.

The High Court bench of Justice Md Salim and Justice Shahed Nuruddin passed the order after Fakhrul's lawyers led by Zainul Abedin prayed to the court for holding hearing on the matter as an "urgent case".

Lawyer Sagir Hossain Leon, also a lawyer for Mirza Fakhrul, said they prayed to the court to hold the hearing on Monday, December 18. However, the court deferred it saying that the hearing might be not concluded in a single day remaining before the next annual vacation of the SC starting since December 19.

On December 7, the HC bench refused to grant him bail, but issued a rule asking the state to explain in seven days as to why Fakhrul should not be granted bail in the case. The state was asked to comply with the rule within one week.
