HC upholds nomination of Ctg-2 BNP candidate Sarowar Alamgir

The High Court (HC) on Thursday made absolute a rule it had issued earlier, declaring the nomination of BNP candidate Sarowar Alamgir for the Chattogram-2 constituency valid, reports BSS.

The High Court division bench of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Md Ashif Hasan pronounced the judgment this afternoon.

Earlier, the Election Commission (EC) had declared Sarowar Alamgir's nomination papers valid. However, his rival candidate from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Muhammad Nurul Amin, filed an appeal alleging that Sarwar Alamgir was a loan defaulter. After hearing the appeal, the EC cancelled Sarowar's candidacy.

The BNP candidate later filed an appeal with the High Court, and on January 27, 2026, the court ordered the restoration of his nomination for the Chattogram-2 constituency.

However, Muhammad Nurul Amin filed a petition seeking leave to appeal against the High Court order. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court subsequently granted leave to appeal and ordered that if Sarowar Alamgir was successful in the election, the declaration of his result would remain stayed until the final disposal of the appeal.
