Home minister warns against tarnishing country’s image

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has warned of tougher action against those spreading propaganda and misinformation about Bangladesh on social media, report agencies.

"The government will not tolerate any attempt to damage the country's image internationally," he said.

Speaking during a courtesy meeting with Palestinian Ambassador to Bangladesh Yousef SY Ramadan at his ministry office on Thursday, the minister said Bangladesh is a progressive and moderate Muslim-majority country. He said any attempt to portray it otherwise on social media to undermine its global reputation would be dealt with firmly.

"Any attempt to misrepresent Bangladesh on social networking platforms with the intention of tarnishing its international image will be dealt with firmly," Salahuddin said.

He added that those involved in such cybercrimes and propaganda would be identified through proper investigations, brought to justice without delay and face exemplary punishment.

The meeting also discussed bilateral cooperation, law and order, security issues, and measures to facilitate visa support for Palestinian students pursuing higher education in Bangladesh.

Meanwhile, Ambassador of Palestine to Bangladesh Yousef SY Ramadan paid a courtesy call on Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at his office on Thursday and discussed various issues of mutual interest, including security cooperation between the two countries and easing the visa issuance process for Palestinian students.

During the meeting, the minister stated that Bangladesh has historically extended its unwavering support to the freedom struggle of Palestine and the establishment of its sovereign state.

The Palestinian envoy noted that a large number of Palestinian students are currently pursuing higher education in various public and private educational institutions in Bangladesh, seeking special cooperation regarding the issuance of On-Arrival Visas to facilitate the smooth arrival and studies of Palestinian students in Bangladesh.
