July 06, 2007 00:00:00

Former communications minister Nazmul Huda Thursday questioned the transparency of trial in a special court dealing with high-profile political corruption, reports bdnews24.com.
"Maybe for this (the question) five years of Jail sentence will be increased to 14 years", Huda said in the Special Judge's Court-2 housed on the premises of the parliament building.
The former minister, widely believed to be one of the most corrupt ministers in the latest BNP cabinet, made the remarks during the hearing of a case for charge framing against him and his wife, Sigma.
" Is it a camera court (secret court)? Is any secret trial going on here?
"The situation in the country is not normal at the moment. I am accused of corruption, but everybody is saying I am corrupt, corrupt and corrupt. It means I have been convicted even before the trial is complete", Huda told judge Amar Kumar Roy.
"If anybody is here to influence the proceedings of the trial, he should go away. I can't get normal justice in this situation", continued Huda.
UNB adds: An extortion case was filed against former Communications Minister Nazmul Huda Thursday for taking Tk 10 million (1.0 crore) from an auto company through abuse of power.
Uttara Motors Limited Managing Director (MD) Matiur Rahman filed the case with Dhanmondi police against the detained ex-minister at about 5:00 pm, the police said.
According to the case statement, Huda demanded Tk 10 million from the company MD and 'threatened to kill' him if he failed to comply.
A scared Rahman paid him that amount at his office on three Dates-on December 1, 2002, Feb 19, 2003 and March 11, 2003, according to the allegation.
Joint forces in drive against corruption in high places, in the changed situation, arrested Nazmul Huda, who was Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) lawmaker from Dhaka-1 constituency, from his house on February 4 on charges of corruption.
