Hundreds of Japanese to leave Dhaka tomorrow

FE Report | April 01, 2020 00:00:00

Hundreds of Japanese nationals will leave Dhaka tomorrow (Thursday) by a chartered plane amid a lockdown-like situation in Bangladesh because of coronavirus.

Japanese Commerce and Industry Association and Japanese Associations in Dhaka are arranging the flight for an estimated 350 passengers.

The Japanese Embassy in Dhaka confirmed this, saying that it is also working closely with the associations.

In its website, the embassy earlier announced closure of visa window on March 28 and library use on March 22 to avert any untoward situation centring COVID 19.

The rapid spread of the novel virus has already made an impact on all economic and financial activities.

One source said the April 2 departure from Bangladesh is being done at the instruction from the Japanese government.

But another source said many business and consulting firms got instructions from their headquarters to leave.

However, the Japanese citizens having crucial jobs can stay back here, said one of the sources.

Officials of business firms like Mitsubishi, Honda and ready-made garment units are among the people who are leaving the country.

Most of the consultants for metro rails, third terminal project and Matarbari power plant project will also leave as there is no scope to do any fieldwork now.
