October 18, 2007 00:00:00

Inspector General (IG) of Police Noor Mohammad Wednesday said that the August 20-22 student unrest on the Dhaka University (DU) campus turned violent due to the role of a section of the university teachers.
"The teachers were supposed to cool down the angry students. Instead, they expressed solidarity with the students and raised several demands which intensified the demonstration," Noor Mohammad said.
He was talking to journalists after giving statement to the judicial inquiry commission headed by Justice Habibur Rahman Khan at his Circuit House office in the Wednesday afternoon.
The campus violence spread to the city streets and other parts of the country resulting in damage to public and private property. Since then DU remained closed affecting the academic career of about 30,000 students.
IGP said some outsiders were also involved in spreading and intensifying the students' protest outside the campus.
A total of 102 witnesses including police and army personnel have so far testified before the commission.
