Law Minister Anisul Huq on Tuesday said that Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan has breached discipline by making statements before the press about a letter that the government lawyer claimed was being prepared by the attorney general's office in relation to Prof Yunus.
The law minister made the remarks while replying to a question from journalists after attending a discussion organised by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) on the proposed cyber security law at the Jatiya Press Club on Tuesday.
Attorney General (AG) AM Amin Uddin, however, declined the matter of preparing any statement by his office protesting a recent open letter by global leaders and Nobel laureates in favour of Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus.
DAG Imran's intent to tell the media about not signing an alleged statement on Dr Yunus was to make somebody happy, he asserted. "Certainly, he has done it in order to make somebody happy."
"He (DAG Imran) is employed by the Attorney General's Office. If he wants to speak to the journalist, he should either resign and speak or obtain permission from the attorney general's permission. He didn't do any of them," BSS quoted the minister as saying.
Asked if any action would be taken against him, the law minister said, "We will look into it."
Meanwhile, the chief law officer of the state during a media briefing at his office on the Supreme Court premises on Tuesday said: "He (Imran) didn't talk to me before briefing newsmen at a place where regular briefings take place. You, reporters, enquire into this matter."
Replying to a query, the AG said he would not take any step against Mr Imran as he was not the appointing authority.
Amin Uddin said he earlier briefed the media on behalf of the Attorney General's office about the open letter to the prime minister over the trial proceedings against Dr Yunus.
Therefore, no other law officer under the AG office needed to make any briefing to the media on this issue, he added.
DAG Imran at a media briefing on Monday said Nobel laureate Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus was being "subjected to judicial harassment".
The state lawyer said he also refrained from signing a statement, being prepared by the AG office, countering a joint statement issued by global big shots.
A notification has been issued asking the attorney general, additional attorney generals, deputy attorney generals and assistant attorney generals to sign a statement to this end, said Mr Imran.
