The International Farakka Committee (IFC) on Saturday organised parallel human chains in 11 cities and towns across the country to protest India's move to build 16 more barrages on the transboundary Ganges river, reports UNB.
The committee also organised human chains in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia on the same issue on the same day.
Addressing the human chain in front of the Jatiya Press Club in the capital, political leaders and water experts observed that the physical security of Bangladesh as well as the environment and lives of its people have long been threatened by unilateral withdrawal of the Ganges water by India.
Withdrawal of excessive water from upstream of the Ganges inside India has led to the desertification of the South-Western region of Bangladesh, they noted.
The northern region of Bangladesh is going to face the same consequences because of diversion of the flow of the Teesta river on the upstream in India, they added.
Convener of Nagorik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Jatiya Party leader Mostafa Jamal Haider, Biplabi Workers' Party general secretary Saiful Haque, Workers' Party leader Aminul Islam Golap, water expert Inamul Huq and IFC Bangladesh president Prof Jasim Uddin Ahmad addressed the human chain.
