Speakers at a discussion in the city said on Saturday 'internal colonialism' has been established in Bangladesh with the announcement of the broadcast policy for the media and holding a 'voter-less 'illegal' election' on January 5, reports UNB.

They came up with the remarks at a discussion, titled 'Challenges of Democracy in Bangladesh', arranged by South Asia Youth for Peace and Prosperity Society at the Jatiya Press Club.

Speaking on the occasion, BNP standing committee member Mahbubur Rahman said the constitution of Bangladesh is not suitable for an independent country and that is why it should be repealed immediately.

"Whenever the ruling party has amended the constitution, it was intended to hold in the regime for a long time," he added.

The senior BNP leader said the human rights situation in the country can be understood with the recent incidents in Narayanganj and Feni.

He also said the government came up with the broadcast policy to gag the media and lock the mouths of 160 million people.

Nagarik Oikya Convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna said there is no genuine

politician in parliament at this moment, but businessmen. "They don't discuss the issues of public interest in parliament."

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal president ASM Abdur Rab, former diplomat Ashfaq Chowdhury and Prof Dilara Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
