Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu at the first Commonwealth Domain Name System Forum-2014 conference in London emphasised the development of Country Code Top Level Domains (ccTLDs) for each country, reports UNB.

The minister said this while presiding over a session on 'Investment and Innovation in Domain Name System' on the first day of the two-day conference Thursday at London Hilton Metropole Hotel, said a media release Saturday.

Inu stressed the implementation of .bd (DOT BD) domain for Bangladesh, as he said it would enhance the security of the country's web portals and will encourage the internet-based organisations of Bangladesh for their capacity building.

He also said implementation of ccTLDs will reduce digital discrimination among people, as more local contents will be developed, including contents in native languages, making the internet useful for people from all walks of life.

This will increase local revenue and decrease foreign-dependence and save foreign exchequer at the same time, Inu added.

The Commonwealth Domain Name System Forum- 2014 conference was organised by Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) in assistance with Internet Cooperation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), UK's Internet registry organization-Nominet and the US-based organization public Internet registry (PIR).

The issues on innovation of domain names, investment and security, cyberspace management, generic top-level domain (gTLD) and their social impact in Commonwealth countries were elaborately discussed in the forum.

Vice-president of Bangladesh Internet Governance Forum (BIGF) Dr Akram H Chowdhury and member of BIGF and Bangladesh Computer Association Afroza Haq also attended the conference.
