Hundreds of Islamic hard liners staged anti-cartoon protests in the city Friday demanding closure of the daily Prothom Alo for printing the cartoon in its weekly supplement "Alpin" ridiculing Prophet Muhammad (SM) and Islam, reports UNB.
The protesters carrying the banners of Hijbut Tahrir, Islami Shasantantra Andolon, Islami Oikya Andolon and Islami Chhatra Majlis burned down the effigy of the Prothom Alo editor. No untoward incident was reported.
Witnesses said the demonstrators held a rally at the north gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Juma' prayers and started proceeding towards the Prothom Alo office at the city's Karwan Bazar Friday.
But the police put barricades near the Jatiya Press Club and Bijoy Nagar water tank halting the agitating protesters.
Being intercepted by the police, the protestors staged sit-in at the Purana Paltan road crossing and raised slogan against the editors of the Prothom Alo and the Daily Star, an English daily.
They said that although their movement was not against the government, but the government took stand against them in support of the Prothom Alo.
Joint Coordinator of Hijbut Tahrir Kazi Morshedul Huq said they would form committees across the country in the next 15 days against the Prothom Alo and the Saptahik 2000, a weekly.
