Prominent Islamic leaders led by Baitul Mukarram Khatib Obaidul Huq Monday demanded halting daily Prothom Alo publication for printing a cartoon in its supplement 'Alpin' that hurt the religious sentiment of the Muslims, reports UNB.
They put forward the demand during a meeting with Law and Information Adviser of the caretaker government Mainul Hosein at his ministry Tuesday afternoon, as the cartoon already created stir in the circles of the clerics.
"This is a grievous offence, this is dangerous," the Khatib of the national mosque told journalists after lodging the protest with the government.
IOJ Chairman Fazlul Huq Aminee, who was present at the meeting, demanded arrest of the editor, the publisher and others concerned for publishing the cartoon and their 'exemplary punishment'.
Aminee called for meeting the demands by Friday.
Editor of the 'Monthly Madina' Mohiuddin Khan said the Alpin-published cartoon is highly objectionable and that hurts the religious sentiments of the people.
He said the Alem-Ulema believed that it is a planned conspiracy against the country by a certain vested quarter.
"We cannot see their conspiracy succeed", Khan said.
Reciprocating their sentiment, the law adviser said this is an act of hatred and the government is concerned about it.
"Whoever committed this, a conspiracy and provocation is working behind it," he said, adding that the government is determined to foil the conspiracy.
