Opposition leader in parliament and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman took part in a cleanliness campaign at the Baitun Noor Mosque area near Monipur High School and College (main girls' branch) in the capital's Mirpur on Wednesday.
"Through state reforms, we want to remove all forms of filth from the country. We will build a clean nation. If everyone keeps their own surroundings clean, the entire country will become clean," he told the media.
"If July had not come, Tarique Rahman would not have become the prime minister, and I would not have become the opposition leader. Therefore, we should all work to implement the spirit of July in parliament," he continued.
Emerging from a local mosque after the Fazr prayers, Dr Shafiqur, wearing gloves and a mask, picked up a broom and started cleaning the road.
"I said I would start my duty by cleaning the roads, and I am keeping my word," he said.
He stressed that the initiative was not a one-day publicity stunt.
"Our units will work throughout this community every day," he added.
The Jamaat leader urged party volunteers to come out after morning prayers and clean the streets for at least half an hour daily.
"If they can do it for an hour, all the better. Whether or not we receive funds from the government, we will continue this initiative," he said.
He also said he wanted to develop his constituency into a "model neighbourhood" in Dhaka.
