Jamaat-e-Islami has urged the Election Commission (EC) to withdraw its proposed provision disqualifying MPO-listed teachers from contesting local government elections.
The party also called for the cancellation of the contractual appointment of an additional secretary to the EC Secretariat, alleging that the official has political affiliations.
The demands were placed during a meeting between a six-member Jamaat delegation, led by Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital's Agargaon on Wednesday.
The party submitted a formal letter outlining its demands.
In the letter, Jamaat also requested the EC to take into account the recommendations it had previously submitted on June 30 regarding the proposed local government election code of conduct.
The party objected to the EC's proposal, which has been forwarded to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, to declare MPO-listed teachers ineligible to contest local government elections.According to the letter, implementation of the proposal would deprive several hundred thousand teachers and employees of more than 30,000 MPO-enlisted educational institutions of the opportunity to participate in local government elections.
Election Commissioners Abdur Rahmanel Masud and Tahmida Ahmad, along with EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed, were also present at the meeting.
Other members of the Jamaat delegation included Assistant Secretaries General Dr AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad.
