Jamaat leader shot dead in Pabna

PABNA, Apr 20: A union level Jamaat leader was shot and hacked to death by assailants at a remote area in Pabna Sadar upazila on Sunday night.

The deceased was identified as Md Shariful Islam, 45, son of Adu Sheikh, a resident of Char Balarampur village and also the vice president of Bhanrara union parishad of Jamaat unit. He was a teacher of Balrampur Dakhil Madrassha in the sadar upazila.

According to the police and eyewitnesses, a gang of armed assailants numbering 4 to 5 wearing masks swooped on Sharif when he was watching television with others at a tea stall in front of Char Balarampur High School around 9:30pm.

The miscreants first shot Shariful and hacked him indiscriminately to confirm his death, said Abu Sayeed, chairman of Bharara union parishad.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body at around 11.00pm.

The body was sent to Pabna Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

A case was filed with Pabna Sadar police station about the killing.

Ahsanul Haque, officer-in-charge of Pabna Sadar police station said they were investigating the killing.
