Jamaat observes hartal in Jhenidah

JHENIDAH, Apr 22 (UNB): A daylong hartal, enforced by local unit of Jamaat-e-Islami in Kotchandpur and Maheshpur upazilas protesting the killing of Jamaat worker and UP member Abul Kalam passed off without any incident of violence Tuesday.
During the hartal hours, no vehicles except rickshaws were seen plying in the two upazila headquarters.
Most of the business establishments kept their shutters down although no picketing was seen in support of the shutdown.
Additional policemen remained deployed at important places of the upazila headquarters during the hartal hours.
On April 18, miscreants kidnapped Jamat worker and Alangi union parished member Abul Kalam from his Balabaria village home in Kotchandpur Upazila.
Police recovered the bullet-hit body of Kalam from Mamunshia village in Sadar Upazila Monday morning.
Another adds from Jessore: Two people, including a policeman, were injured in a gunfight between police and Jamaat-Shibir men at Jhumjhumpur Moylakhana area in Sadar Upazila early Tuesday.
The injured were identified as constable Bulbul, 28, and Mushahid, 30, an activist of Fatehpur union unit Jamaat-Shibir.
