Head of Asia Division of Japan Foreign Ministry, now in Dhaka to see current political developments, said that Japan favoured early restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.
Director General for South East and South West Asia of Japan Foreign Ministry Chihiro Atsumi told journalists after his meeting with Adviser for Foreign Affairs Iftekhar Ahmed Chowdhury in the city Monday, reports UNB.
"Japan and Bangladesh are very good friends and our bilateral relation is excellent. We discussed current political situation and reform by the caretaker government", Atsumi said.
Japanese Ambassador in Bangladesh Masayuki Inoue was present during the meeting.
Atsumi said the foreign adviser explained to him the current activities of the caretaker government and he appreciated his explanation very much and expressed the hope that democracy would be restored through free and fair elections.
Asked if he found current situation congenial for increasing Japanese investment, the Japanese Foreign ministry official said Bangladesh had a lot of potential for development and the country was trying to move towards that direction.
"We hope democracy will be restored…business will come", he said, adding that he was here to watch what was happening in Bangladesh.
Besides, the two sides discussed United Nations Security Council (UNSC) reforms as Japan is a candidate for an expanded UNSC. Bangladesh earlier extended her formal support to Japan's candidature.
Adviser Chowdhury said Japan is a very good friend and important development partner of Bangladesh and a major source of economic and political support.
He said a stable situation now prevailed in Bangladesh and the Japanese investors should come with big investments.
He said Atsumi showed keen interest in bilateral economic and commercial relations, including investment from Japan.
