Journalist denied bail over Ananta murder

SYLHET, June 17 (UNB): A Sylhet court rejected on Wednesday the bail petition of photojournalist Idris Ali in a case filed in connection with the murder of blogger Ananta Bijoy Das.

Judge of Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate court-2 Farhana Haque passed the order following the bail petition of Idris's lawyer Abdul Gaffar.

The court also fixed June 23 for next hearing.

Blogger Ananta, also an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Mancha, was hacked to death by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Subidbazar Bankalapara in the city on May 12.

On May 13, Rateshwar Das, elder brother of Ananta, filed a case against four people with Airport thana.

On May 25, Police Headquarters asked the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) to hand over the blogger killing case to the CID for investigation.

A CID team arrested Idris, a photojournalist of the Daily Sabuj Sylhet published in Sylhet and son of Ilias Ali of Fatehgarh village under Airport thana, from his residence on June 7.

Judge of the Metropolitan Cognisance Court-3 Farzana Yesmin placed Idris Ali on a seven-day remand on the same day.

Later, a court sent Idris to jail when Inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police Arman Ali produced him before the court on completion of his seven-day remand on June 15.
