Journo Probir Sikdar released on bail

A Faridpur court granted on Wednesday bail to journalist Probir Sikdar a day after he was taken on a three-day remand, report agencies.

He was arrested in a case filed under the Information and Communication Technology (amendment) Act 2013.

Judge of Cognizance Court-1 M Hamidul Islam passed the order in the morning.

Earlier, the same court on Tuesday put Probir Sikdar on a three-day remand on a petition filed by police seeking a 10-day remand for him in the case.

Members of the Detective Branch of police picked up Probir Sikdar, the owner of online newspaper 'Uttaradhikar Ekattor News' from his Indira Road office in the capital on Sunday evening.

Shortly afterwards, a case was filed with Faridpur Kotwali thana against the journalist.

"I will go home (Kanaipur) first. Then return to Dhaka," Sikdar told journalists after walking free.

He also thanked Bangladeshi journalists, rights organisations and professional bodies for playing a big role in his release.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman said on Wednesday the way journalist Probir Sikder was treated after his arrest 'did not bear any resemblance of civility', and it was also tantamount to the violation of human rights.

"Will not go to the discussion on what allegation Probir Sikder was arrested. That's a concern of the court. But the manner in which he was treated… they way he was tugged as he was handcuffed violated the minimum dignity of the accused. Which is tantamount to human rights violation," he said.
