JS body for quick disposal of August 21 grenade attack case

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry recommended on Tuesday quick disposal of the August 21 grenade attack case of 2004 after ending the process of recording deposition of witnesses, reports BSS.

The recommendation was made at the 14th meeting of the standing committee at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with Committee Chairman Suranjit Sengupta presiding.

Committee members Law Minister Anisul Haq, Abdul Matin Khasru, Sahara Khatun, M Shamsul Haq Tuku, M Abdul Majid Khan, Talukder M Yunus, Advocate M Ziaul Haq Mridha and Safura Begum attended the meeting, said an official release.

The meeting held discussions on two reports of Law Commission and a report of a parliamentary committee on disposing of pending cases in courts across the country.

According to the reports, about 2.8 million cases are pending with lower courts. There are 1,700 judges, including magistrates, in the courts to deal with the large number of cases.

The report recommended recruiting 3,000 new judges to clear backlog of the cases.

About 0.32 million cases are lying pending with the High Court. The committee recommended taking measures for quick disposal of the cases.

The meeting suggested expansion of activities of the Judicial Training Institute in the divisional cities.
