JS body for setting up school for autistics

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare Ministry suggested Sunday authorities concerned to take necessary steps for setting up a specialised school in each district town for children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), reports BSS.

The parliamentary body also recommended for introducing a service centre for elderly people in each health facility across the country.

The recommendations came from a meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with Committee Chairman Md Mozammel Hossain in the chair.

Committee members and State Minister for Social Welfare Ministry Promod Mankin, Monoranjan Sheel Gopal, Ayesha Ferdous, Md Habibe Millat, Peer Foyezur Rahman, Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, Md Abdul Matin and Lutfa Taher attended the meeting.

Holding a threadbare discussion on the government programmes for improving living standard of autistic children, the meeting asked the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of 64 districts to set up the school for the autistic children with the help of local people.

It also recommended the finance ministry to increase allocation for the social welfare ministry in the upcoming national budget to ensure socio-economic condition of disadvantaged, poor, orphans, elderly people, widows, disabled persons and marginalised people aimed at turning Bangladesh into a welfare state.

It also expressed his satisfaction over the progress of implementation of various projects undertaken by the ministry for ensuring overall welfare of the disadvantaged people of society.

Another BSS report adds: Nearly 1.5 million children aged about five are out-of-school students in pre-primary education, the number will be 3.8 million, if the children of four years of age are added.

This was revealed at the launching ceremony of Education Watch-2013 on "State of Pre-primary Education in Bangladesh" organised by Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) in cooperation with European Union (EU) at the LGED Bhbaban in the city Sunday.

Primary and Mass Education Minister Advocate Mostafizur Rahman, founder chairperson of BRAC Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Executive Director of CAMPE Rasheda K Choudhury, Director General of Directorate of Primary Education Shyamol Kanti Ghosh addressed the function with CAMPE chairperson Kazi Rafiqul Alam in the chair.
