A parliamentary watchdog put forward on Thursday a 23-point recommendation, including raising the number of judges to 5,000 from 1700, for reducing backlog cases and modernising the judiciary, reports UNB.
"We've made a 23-point of recommendation for reducing over 3.2 million backlog cases and modernising the judiciary so that people have an easy access to justice," said chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Suranjit Sengupta.
He was talking to reporters at the Parliament Media Centre after a meeting of the parliamentary body.
Suranjit, also a former minister, said they suggested increasing the number of judges at both the lower and higher judiciary.
With their suggestion of increasing the number of judges to 5,000, the committee backed off from its earlier recommendation of introducing double shift at the court for quick disposal of pending cases.
The committee chairman said they backtracked from their earlier suggestion due to non-cooperation from judges and lawyers.
The Awami League leader said they also recommended increasing facilities at the lower court alongside enhancing logistic supports, including modern equipment and skilled manpower.
"There're some judges whose family stay in Dhaka. On Thursday, they leave office early to meet their families and on Sunday they are also late to attend office when they return from Dhaka."
Considering this, the parliamentary watchdog suggested ensuring the attendance of judges in their offices in due time (from 9:30am to 5pm) each day and stopping leaving of office by the judges.
"Monitoring by the higher authorities has to be expedited; and holing a monthly meeting of district judges and a conference of district committees after every three months has to be ensured as per rules," the committee recommended.
