JS passes Non-Formal Education Bill

The parliament on Tuesday passed the 'Non-Formal Education Bill 2014' aiming to expand and enhance the quality of non-formal education in the country, reports UNB.

Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman moved the bill in the Jatiya Sangsad (JS). It was passed by voice vote.

The newly passed law will help expand the country's non-formal education in addition to improving its quality. The law will be implemented by the Non-Formal Education Bureau that will look after the administrative aspects.

Under the new law, a Non-Formal Education Board will be constituted with the Director General of the Bureau as its chairman to regulate the academic standards and the curricula of non-formal education.

There will be one or more Non-Formal Education Board to fulfill the aim of the proposed Law.

The government will form an advisory council comprising professionals, experts, and representatives from government and non-government organisations and other related persons. The council will give advice and evaluate the ongoing programmes to help the government make policy at the national level.

About the provision of punishment under the proposed law, anyone violating the law or impeding its implementation will be sentenced to maximum six months' imprisonment or fined maximum Tk 50,000.
