BNP standing committee member A Moyeen Khan on Friday said the next national election must be held under the non-party caretaker government (CG), reports UNB.
"There is no alternative to holding the polls under an impartial government," he said while addressing a discussion in front of the National Press Club.
The discussion, titled "What Form of Government We Need for the Next Polls" was organised by Hridoye Bangladesh, a social organisation.
Moyeen Khan said that the next CG must have two characteristics: It has to be neutral and non-partisan. "Our leader Khaleda Zia has already mentioned about the framework of the CG without which BNP will not participate in the polls."
He said that the Awami League (AL) had scrapped the CG system fearing they will not be able to return to power with people's vote in the next general election.
The BNP leader pointed out that the AL wanted to replicate the permanent settlement introduced by Lord Cornwallis, the first Governor General of British India, so that they could freely loot the country's resources.
Chaired by Hridoye Bangladesh president Mohammad Hanif, the discussion meeting was also addressed, among others, by BNP chairperson's adviser Enam Ahmed Chowdhury and Jubo Dal president Moazzem Hossain Alal.
