Police in a drive arrested 64 leaders and activists of BNP and its front organizations, including Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, from his Lalmatia residence in the capital Saturday, reports UNB.
Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Biplob Kumar Sarkar said acting on secret information, a team of Mohammadpur thana police conducted a raid on the house of Alal in Lalmatia and arrested him along with 63 other leaders and activists of BNP and its fronts around 10:30 am.
Police arrested them while coming out of Alal's house after attending a meeting arranged there to work out a plan to carry out subversive activities during Sunday's hartal, he added.
Sammilito Islami Dal Samuha, a coalition of Islamic parties, called a countrywide daylong hartal Wednesday for Sunday (today) demanding recently sacked minister Latif Siddique's trial for his disparaging remarks about Hajj and Tablig Jamaat.
Meanwhile, condemning the arrest of Jubo Dal president Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and other BNP leaders and activists, BNP said Saturday the government move was part of its continued fascist behaviour.
In a statement, BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "Police have created a heinous and spiteful situation by suddenly arresting Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal and 80 other leaders and activists as they met at Alal's Mohammapur house." He said Awami League is repressing opposition leaders and activists and common people to protect its existence as the ruling party has realised that it has lost popularity due to its misrule.
