11 JU hall union leaders switch to JCD

Abdur Rashid Zitu, vice-president (VP) of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU), has formally joined the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Alongside him, several representatives from different hall unions of the university joined the Jatiyatabadi Chatra Dal (JCD), the student wing of BNP.

Jitu announced his decision to join the BNP at a programme at the party's Nayapaltan central office in the capital on Friday afternoon.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, along with the Jatiyabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) president and general secretary, welcomed the new members.

Rizvi expressed optimism that the newcomers would help strengthen the BNP and its student wing.

Speaking at the event, Jitu said, "Bangladesh is currently going through a period of political transition. I have made it clear that I want to engage in politics with a force that upholds the spirit of the 1952 Language Movement, the 1971 Liberation War and the 2024 anti-fascist movement."

"I believe the Bangladesh Nationalist Party embodies these historic movements. There is no alternative to BNP in building a happy and prosperous Bangladesh," he added.

The JU hall union leaders who joined the JCD alongside Jitu are Nawab Salimullah Hall Vice-President Ibn Shihab, Al Beruni Hall Vice-President Rifat Ahmed Shakil, AFM Kamaluddin Hall Vice-President GM M Raihan Kabir, Rabindranath Tagore Hall Vice-President Amit Banik, Nawab Faizunnesa Hall Vice-President Bubli Ahmed, Begum Khaleda Zia Hall Vice-President Farhana Bithi, Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall General Secretary Shahriar Nazim Riyad, and Shahid Rafiq Jabbar Hall General Secretary Shariful Islam.

The JUCSU VP also announced that three hall union leaders joined the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD). They are Shahid Salam Barkat Hall Vice-President Maruf Hasan, General Secretary Masud Rana Min, and AFM Kamaluddin Hall Assistant General Secretary Ripon Mandal. However, they were not present at the ceremony.

Jitu was elected JUCSU Vice-President in September last year as a candidate of the 'Independent Students' Coalition' panel.
