Kamaruzzaman files review petition with SC

Condemned convict M Kamaruzzaman, also incumbent assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, filed a petition with the Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday, the last day of lodging the petition, against the verdict that upheld his death sentence awarded by the trial court for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, reports UNB.

Confirming the filing of the review plea with the relevant section of the Appellate Division, barrister Shishir Manir, the counsel for the condemned convict, told the news agency that they have submitted the paper book, an abstract of all the facts of the case along with the judgments, containing 704 pages that includes a 45-page petition mentioning 44 grounds for review.

Referring to the rules, counsel Shishir further said the review petition will be heard on priority basis.

After officially receiving the full text of the judgment of the Appellate Division that was released on February 18, the review petition was filed as per the court rules.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam told reporters that the execution of Kamaruzzaman's death warrant, issued by the trial court on February 19, stands inoperative since the review plea has been filed.

On May 9, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal -2 condemned him  outfit, to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.
