SIRAJGANJ, Oct 11 (UNB): BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia Monday called upon the student community to take preparation for ousting the 'present autocratic government', saying that this may cost more blood.
"You've overthrown one autocrat (Ershad). Take preparation for removing another autocrat," she said.
Begum Zia was addressing a student-mass rally on a ground close to Saidabad Rail Gate in the city.
Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) organised the rally marking the Jehad Day.
Naziruddin Jehad, an activist of JCD, who hailed from Ullapara in Sirajganj, was shot dead during the anti-Ershad movement on October 10, 1990.
Khaleda claimed that the present autocratic regime was taking lives of people everyday.
"It may need more blood to topple this government", she added.
She, however, said her party would announce peaceful democratic programmes in the future against the 'repressive, oppressive and killer government' as BNP believes in peace, stability and development.
The opposition leader urged the student community to join the future movements to save the country and ensure welfare and security of the people.
At the outset of the meeting, Khaleda expressed deep shock at the loss of lives in a train accident, only about 200 yards away from the rally venue, at about 3:15 pm Monday.
At least five people were killed in the accident near Saidabad Rail Gate when a Dhaka-bound intercity train 'Drutajan' from Dinajpur hit people who were coming to attend the meeting, according to witnesses.
The BNP chairperson prayed for early recovery of those who were injured in the accident.
She alleged that the train accident was staged under a conspiracy to foil the rally.
During her 45-minute speech from 4:40 pm, Khaleda criticised the government for its 'failures' in various sectors including power, gas and water, price-hike and unemployment, as well as for political repression.
Presided over by JCD President Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, the rally was also addressed by Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, Amanullah Aman and Amirul Islam Alim.
Later, Khaleda started for Baraigram of Natore at around 5:45 pm to visit the bereaved family members of Baraigram Upazila Chairman Sanaullah Noor Babu who was allegedly killed by Awami League terrorists Friday.
The BNP chairperson reiterated her call to government officials not to obey 'unjust orders' and perform their duty by maintaining the rules and norms.
She also urged them not to resort to any repression, cautioning that names, addresses and designations of the government officials were known to them.
