BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has blamed the government for the death of BM Bakir Hossain, joint secretary of the Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dol, in police custody and termed it "clear violation of human rights and contrary to the rule of law."
In a statement issued Friday, the BNP chief said: "The mysterious death of Bakir without treatment is not acceptable at all. The present government can't avoid the responsibility of this death. It's a clear violation of human rights and against the rule of law," reports UNB.
Khaleda Zia further said: "None is safe from the inhuman torture unleashed on the nationalist forces across the country by the present government."
The BNP chief demanded judicial inquiry into Bakir's "unnatural death" and expressed the hope that the government would take immediate steps in this connection.
Mr Bakir died in custody at the city's Apollo Hospitals at about 2:30pm Thursday. Earlier, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after he fell unconscious in jail on December 22.
