Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu, MP, said Wednesday that by associating with militancy and keeping Jamaat on her lap, Khaleda Zia would not be able to become the queen of democracy, reports BSS.
He said, "Khaleda Zia talks of democracy a little but goes around with Jamaat," and added, "If you go around with friends of militancy, you will not be able to establish democracy."
The information minister was speaking as the chief guest at a roundtable on "Security of national and public life and the media" at the Jatiya Press Club, organised by the weekly 'Notun Katha'.
The editor of the weekly Hazera Sultana chaired the programme.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon, Journalist Kamal Lohani, Director General of Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB) Shah Alamgir, and general secretary of Workers' Party Fazle Hossain Badshah, MP, spoke on the occasion, among others.
The information minister said, "Khaleda Zia is an advocate for militants and terrorists. If militants and terrorists are arrested, she advocates for them."
He said, "Khaleda Zia has not got rid of militants, they are her friends. Why is the media refraining from identifying her as a friend of militancy?"
Meanwhile, Joint general secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said Khaleda Zia is a big beneficiary of the killing of Ziaur Rahman.
"Many people across the country believe that Begum Khaleda Zia might be involved in the killing of founder of BNP and former president Ziaur Rahman. Her (Begum Zia) involvement in the killing could be unearthed if investigation is carried out. Why she did not arrange trial of Zia killing although she was in power twice?" he posed question.
Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif came up with this comment while speaking at a press conference in the political office of AL president Sheikh Hasina at Dhanmondi in the city.
