October 17, 2007 00:00:00

Former prime ministers Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina observed Eid-ul-Fitr in makeshift jails without their children or party leaders, reports UNB.
Harsh political reality landed them in the makeshift jails in the parliament building complex on charges of extortion and corruption.
Scores of AL and BNP leaders with bouquet in hand converged outside the makeshift jails from the morning, but the authorities did not allow them to meet their leaders. Only a few close relatives were permitted to meet Khaleda Zia and Hasina.
The jail sources said six close relations, including Arafat Rahman Coco's wife and his mother-in-law and Sayeed Iskandar's wife, met Khaleda Zia at about 11am and spent some time with her.
While Hasina's 10 close relations, including aunt Masuda Kabir, cousin Sheikh Parash and his wife, and niece Papri, met with her around noon.
Khaleda's lawyer Ahmed Azam Khan told reporters that the BNP chairperson offered her Eid prayer at about 9:00am. Some foods were supplied from her residence.
Khaleda Zia conveyed Eid greetings to the people and sought their 'doa' (blessings).
Sheikh Hasina's niece Papri told reporters that the AL chief conveyed Eid greetings to the people and sought their 'doa'. She said Hasina was in pensive mood, as she could not celebrate the Eid with her son and daughter.
DIG (prisons) Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqi told reporters that the two former Prime Ministers were given 'semai', bread, vegetables and 'muri' (puffed rice) for breakfast. They were given 'polao', 'hilsha' fish and beef at lunch and plain rice and chicken for dinner.
