A Dhaka court Monday extended the deadline for Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chief Khaleda Zia's appearance, in a case involving the Bangla daily Dinkal, to August 26, reports bdnews24.com.
Khaleda was to appear before the court of metropolitan magistrate Abdullahel Baqi Monday morning, but the court extended the time.
The order came after Khaleda's lawyers appealed to the court for a time extension stating that they had not got the copy of the summons on time, her lawyer Sanaullah Miah told the news agency.
Khaleda Zia is supposed to appear before the court at around 11:00 am Monday in a case related to the registration of the Daily Dinkal Company. Lawyer Ahmed Azam Khan said that a petition was supposed to be submitted before the court requesting that Khaleda Zia need not appear in court in person.
On June 12, Deputy Registrar Abdul Mannan of the office of the registrar of joint stock companies and firms filed the case with Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrate's court accusing 13 persons, two of whom are already dead.
On the day of the filing of the case, metropolitan magistrate Abdullahel Baqi issued summons against the accused persons and directed them to appear before the court.
Other accused in the case are: BNP Senior Joint Secretary General and Khaleda's elder son Tarique Rahman, former speaker Sheikh Razzak Ali, businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun, former communications minister Nazmul Huda, former member and LDP secretary general Abdul Mannan, former state minister for energy ABM Mosharraf Hossain, former lawmakers Ali Asgar Loby, Engineer Monzurul Ahsan Munshi, Fazlul Azim, BNP industrial affairs secretary Rokan Uddin Mollah, BNP former secretary general late Abdus Salam Talukder and late MP Nurul Amin Talukder.
The case proceedings say that the accused by violating article 1994/36/1 of Company Act did not submit return of the annual financial transactions of Dinkal Publication Limited from 2000 to 2007.
Meantime, security was heightened earlier Monday around Khaleda's Dhaka cantonment's Shahid Moinul Hossain Road home.
Khaleda's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko, his wife, their two children and some domestic aides also live in the house.
Nobody was allowed to pass through the cantonment main road and Shahid Moinul Road. Military check posts were strengthened and military police were found interrogating people more than on other days.
Moinul Road seemed quieter than on other days. No commoner was being allowed to pass through the road. The media was barred from going in front of Khaleda's house. Reporters were kept outside Jahangir Gate.
