Khaleda receives ACC notice, Hasina not yet

July 19, 2007 00:00:00

Former prime minister Khaleda Zia Wednesday received the notice issued by the Anti-corruption Commi-ssion (ACC) directive to submit her wealth statement within seven working days while that of former premier Sheikh Hasina sent to the prison authorities to deliver it to her.
ACC Secretary Mokhlesur Rahman told journalists at the commission office in the city Wednesday afternoon, reports UNB.
"Former PM Khaleda Zia received her notice while the Inspector General (Prisons) received another notice to deliver it to another ex-premier Sheikh Hasina as she is now in sub-jail. We've got both the acknowledgement letters", the ACC secretary said.
The anti-graft watchdog Tuesday decided to issue notices to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson and the Awami League (AL) president to come up with the accounts of their wealth and the notices were dispatched accordingly on the day.
According to sources, two ACC assistant inspectors went to Khaleda's residence at Shaheed Mainul Hossain Road, Dhaka Cantonment in the city Tuesday to deliver the notice, but they took only one copy of it instead of two with them. Therefore, the notice could not be delivered.
The ACC field officers Wednesday paid another visit to the former premier's residence, this time with two copies of the notice.
"Khaleda kept one and returned another after signing them", an official said.
Since Hasina is in sub-jail, her notice was sent to the IG (Prisons) for forwarding it to the detained AL chief. But the prison authorities did not hand over the notice to Hasina until filing of the report at about 8:00 pm. Hasina was arrested Sunday morning.
"The notice has not yet been sent to the sub-jail where she (Hasina) is at the moment", DIG (Prisons) Shamsuddin Haider told the news agency Wednesday evening.
Both the premiers, after receiving the notices, will have seven working days to comply with the ACC directive. Subject to valid reasons, the commission, on application, may extend the time by another seven working days.
