Awami League (AL) Advisory Council member and former Railway Minister Suranjit Sengupta alleged Friday that BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia was misleading the nation over Talpatti issue following Bangladesh's victory in maritime boundary dispute with India, reports BSS.
"Begum Zia has lost balance in her stance following settlement of the case over the maritime boundary dispute and now she has opted for confusing the nation," he said.
Mr Sengupta, a senior parliamentarian of the ruling AL, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city.
Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion on current politics at the auditorium of the Diploma Engineers' Institution at Kakrail in the capital with its adviser Haji Mohammad Selim, MP, in the chair.
Former joint secretary of Awami League (AL) Mozaffar Hossain Paltu, AL assistant secretary Asaduzzaman Durjoy and Bangabandhu Academy secretary general Humayun Kabir Mizi were the discussants, among others.
Mr Sengupta said, "It's the age of globalisation.  Everybody knows and watches whatever incident is taking place around the world. For this reason Khaleda Zia can't deceit the nation anymore. There is no place for the politics of falsehood and darkness now."
The senior AL leader said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has now emerged as a statesman over the verdict in the country's sea-limit dispute. "Sheikh Hasina could implement her decisions with courage and political wisdom. She has proved this in regard to the maritime boundary dispute with India. If she hadn't taken such a decision there would have been a tug of war between Bangladesh and India everyday without any result," he added.
BSS from Kushtia adds: Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu urged Friday BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to give a suggestion on how to review the international court verdict on maritime boundary dispute with India, if she does not accept it.
India has accepted the global court judgment where Bangladesh has won 19,000 square kilometres out of 25,000 square kilometres in the sea, he said, adding that the BNP chief can put forward a suggestion on how to review the verdict, if she does not accept it.
The minister was talking to journalists before joining a function on World Population Day at Bheramara Upazila Parishad auditorium.
Replying to a question over BNP's demand for fresh polls, he said militancy and communalism are the main enemies of democracy.  Therefore, Khaleda Zia would have to sign a national agreement to develop militancy-free democracy in the country, he added.
Inu said the government is maintaining a firm stand against militancy and Khaleda Zia would not be allowed to create anarchy in the name of democracy.
Later, the minister took part at a rally marking the World Population Day-2014.
